3 Life-Changing Reasons To Kick The Gossip Habit

Several years ago I made a vow to give up gossiping and doing so has made me realize how dangerous it is, truly dangerous.

It’s so easy to get caught in an enticing yet unkind conversation about someone else. But if you’ve ever been the target of gossip, as I have been, you know how painful it is. No matter how we excuse it, talking behind another’s back is a harmful habit. My definition of gossip is simple:

Anything you wouldn’t say to
the person you’re talking about

The joke is that a secret is something you tell only one person at a time, but the result is a rumor that spreads like wildfire and alters how another person is perceived. Haven’t we all heard tittle-tattle and thought, Who knew? I had no idea! Beatle George Harrison said it memorably ~

Gossip is the Devil’s radio.

I know you don’t want to be known as a gossip, but it can be so tempting. So here are three reasons to motivate us to kick the habit and make a more positive impact on those around us.

  1. Gossip kills organizations. Whether it’s a global business, a school, a church, or a small partnership, talking behind others’ backs is death to the office. Fueling a negative perception about the boss, a direct report, or even a client saps positive energy from all concerned and diminishes the success of the organization.

In his Forbes magazine article Mike Myatt names it the fastest way to kill corporate culture: “The emotional distress and political discord associated with gossip undermines workplace performance, and can be nothing short of disastrous.”

  2. Gossip kills families. Being part of a strong and loving family is our greatest blessing, one that creates a safe and secure place for everyone fortunate enough to be part of it. Yet when an estrangement occurs, members take sides, and attention is pulled away from taking care of one another and doing our best to contribute to this gift.

My family is a large and loving one, but it too has fallen into this trap. Someone makes a mistake, the finger pointing begins, and the altered perception of this person grows until it’s no longer just gossip but a reason to pull back from the greater family. Fortunately our grandparents and parents were extraordinary models for us, so time goes by, wounds are healed, and we move on together.

  3. Gossip kills relationships. Women sitting around complaining about their husbands, men sharing jokes about wives, friends gossiping about the one who isn’t there. We might as well shoot ourselves in the foot, as the saying goes.

Only once in our 35-year marriage did we gossip about one another, and that was our darkest time. Fortunately we each realized the stories were of our own creation, and we let go of self-fulfilling prophecies that were killing the loving relationship we’d enjoyed for so long.

This habit is indeed the most dangerous one, and the cost is beyond measure. If you’re serious about breaking it, ask yourself, What can I do to break this habit? In addition, here are solutions that are working for me.

  1. Be aware of the pain I have caused others with my gossip.
  2. Let go of my stories about others, one by one, until they’re all gone.
  3. Be present and positive.

And let’s all remember the wisdom of Socrates:

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds
discuss events, weak minds discuss people.

The One Factor In The Brexit Vote No One Is Talking About

The U.K.’s historic vote to leave the European Union, many people believe, was driven by opinions on immigration

And it likely was influenced by the way people are psychologically wired. Analysts on Friday repeatedly cited voters’ emotions as the driver of Brexit. Many people may have voted with fear or anger as their primary motivator, even though it had been well known that leaving could have widespread consequences, including economic turmoil and adverse effects on public health

“We are leaving the EU and entering a dark and uncertain period,”Gary Younge, editor-at-large for The Guardian, wrote after the “leave” vote won Thursday’s referendum. “Offered a choice between fear of the unknown or fear of the foreigner, fear inevitably won. Britain lost.”

Why do we fall for fear or anger-based arguments?

Brexit supporters argued for strict controls on immigration, and said Britain’s membership in the EU led to loose borders. The EU’s free-movement policy allows European nationals to live and work in any EU state without a work permit.

The anti-immigration outcry was heightened by the surge of migrants and refugees, including many from the war-torn Middle East. More than 1 million refugees have poured into Europe, primarily in the past year.

The vote shows deep worry about immigrants and what they mean for job security, safety and economic growth — fears that many consider xenophobic.

It’s not hard to see the fear in Brexit supporters’ tweets:

Political language that incites fear by spotlighting terrorism risks, for example, can sway conservative voters, researchers say. Fearful voters are prone to choosing an outcome based on new information, often abandoning their previous loyalties or affiliations.

Many Brexit voters may have felt neutral or even uninformed about the EU, the alliance they voted to leave. The day after the referendum, many UK residents were Googling, “What is the EU?”

Those who are angry are less likely to be invested in the political status quo and the options available to them. Studies show angry voters tend to be partisan and unreceptive to points that conflict with their own, according to the American Psychological Association.

Emotions can rule in the voting booth

Psychologists are increasingly finding that emotions can play a major role in elections.

“Thinking and feeling go hand in hand. In any decision-making — including political decisions — how people feel about the information they’re being given is important,” Tereza Capelos, an expert in political psychology at Surrey University, told the BBC last year. “Emotions help people make decisions.”

Perhaps that’s why the Brexit decision was shocking. Those arguing for Britain to remain in the EU presented sensible reasons (public health, scientific research, the environment, the economy). But many people rejected those rational views and went with emotion. And for many, the result was devastating:

Europe isn’t the only place where fears and frustrations run amuck and influence voting. It’s happening in the U.S. as well, with Donald Trump riding his proposed ban on all Muslims from entering the U.S. to the Republican presidential nomination.

Of course, human nature is a complex construct. There are a lot of other psychological factors that can inform a person’s vote, from attack ads to a candidate’s physical appearance. But they all influence how an individual feels. That means emotions have a very large impact on important choices, like the Brexit referendum.

Fear and anger can have a lot of agency — but they don’t always make the best decisions. (You listening, America?)

David Cameron Resigns As U.K. Prime Minister After Brexit Vote

British Prime Minister David Cameron resigned his post on Friday morning, following his country’s referendum to leave the European Union, adding political leadership to the U.K.’s growing list of uncertainties.

Cameron, in power since 2010, had called the so-called Brexit referendum of his own accord after promising conservative factions of his party in 2013 that he would hold such a vote if he won re-election last year. Thursday’s referendum badly weakened Cameron and means Britain will be the first country to withdraw from the 28-member EU.

Cameron had spent months advocating that citizens vote to remain in the union, and warned a decision to leave would drastically harm the economy. Voters ultimately spurned his appeals, with about 52 percent favoring Brexit.

Cameron’s dire economic warnings appear to have been founded. After the BBC called the referendum, the British pound plummeted to a 31-year low, pushing down global stock prices and bewildering investors.

Before the vote, Cameron had pledged to stay in office whatever the results. He had considered stepping down if 2014’s Scottish independence vote would have been successful, but the region ultimately decided to remain in the U.K.

Cameron had previously led the Conservative Party to a hearty electoral victory during last year’s election, unseating political opponents in what The Guardian called probably “the biggest surprise in a general election since 1945.”

    ADVICE 26: Surviving a Long-Distance Relationship

    *****

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I’m in a relationship that is long-distance for the summer. I feel like you lose some emotional value when you communicate through text, but my boyfriend prefers to write out what he feels as opposed to talking about it. How should we communicate?

He’s a wonderful man, and we love each other and make each other happy. But it frustrates me that he’s nonchalant about how we spend our time together. If I suggest something, I never get a solid, “Yes, this is what I want.” It’s usually, “Sure,” or “I don’t care, whatever you want to do,” or “I don’t know, you decide.”

I’ve expressed that I dislike making the decisions, and that it feels like he does stuff with me regardless of whether he really wants to or not. His response was that while he doesn’t mind the activities we’ve done, they ultimately don’t matter; he simply wants to spend time with me.

Now we are back on break, and I’m the one to suggest when to Skype or talk. Should I address this with him, or am I overreacting?
    –Marie; Scarsdale, NY

I’m going to answer your first question second, and your second question first.

No, I don’t think you’re overreacting. As my mother-the-therapist says, there’s no such thing as a wrong feeling. You are frustrated by something your boyfriend does — or doesn’t do — and that needs to be addressed. If it’s not, it’s going to end up lurking beneath the surface, breeding resentment and discontent.

Every relationship has its own equilibrium, and yours appears to be out of whack. You’re the one putting in all the effort, and I’m guessing it feels that if you didn’t, the only thing that would keep you a couple would be your Facebook status.

In a way, your boyfriend reminds me of me. Shortly after my now-wife, Emily, and I started dating, she asked me what I wanted — to eat, or watch on TV, or do on Saturday night, I don’t remember — and I replied with the dreaded, “Whatever you want,” like I was part of an arranged marriage in Zamunda.

Truthfully, I (idiotically) thought this was the ultimate expression of chivalry. I’m here, at your service, sacrificing my own needs to satisfy yours.

Emily did not see it this way. She couldn’t stand that answer, and she wasn’t shy about telling me so. It made her feel the same way it makes you feel — that I wasn’t invested in the relationship, and I was making her bear the full burden of it.

Of course, nothing could’ve been further from the truth. My indifference had nothing to do with Emily. As long as our weekend plans aren’t filled with my kryptonite — like, say, seafood meals and opera tickets — I generally do not care what we do or where we go, partly because I’m super low maintenance, partly because I don’t like the pressure of making the choice. It stresses me out. I take it too personally. I spend the whole time worried that the other person isn’t having a good enough time, as if their enjoyment is my responsibility. Which, when it’s your call, I guess it kind of is.

But hearing Emily’s frustration, I knew I had to change. It didn’t matter if I had to fake it, and it didn’t matter how uncomfortable it made me. I had to figure out a way to start making decisions. So I did.

Your boyfriend can do the same. But since he hasn’t yet changed, you’re well within your rights to bring it up again. Tell him exactly what bothers you, and exactly what you need. Leave no doubt.

I’d also suggest opening up to the idea of changing yourself. At least a little bit. When you’ve mentioned this topic in the past, think about what he said — that all he wants to do is spend time with you. That’s a pretty big deal. It’s a foundational pillar of any successful relationship, and I wouldn’t take that for granted.

So while he needs to adjust his behavior, it might be worth adjusting your expectations. There’s a happy medium somewhere in the middle.

As for how you should communicate when you’re apart, this is yet another dynamic in which your boyfriend and I are alike. While I agree that emotions can get lost in texts/emails, I am not a fan of the phone. I can’t stand small talk, and when it comes to more important discussions, I like having time to think about what I want to say.

Traditional Skype conversations are even more awkward, because it’s just a phone call where the other person can see that you’re sitting in your underwear.

I’m much more comfortable being face to face, enjoying a shared experience, when every pause isn’t filled with stress. Which is why a few years ago when Emily and I spent four months doing long-distance, we’d coordinate Skype dates that coincided with the airings of our favorite shows. We each sat on our respective couches, and she’d watch on her TV while I’d watch on mine.

It was the perfect solution for us, and it could be the perfect solution for the two of you — an activity you can do together that’s already been suggested and scheduled.

Medicare Survey Could Be Contributing To Opioid Epidemic

    2016-06-23-1466723097-8462432-HealthcareCostsPhotobyuserImagesMoneyonCreativeCommons.jpg
Photo by Creative Commons user Images Money. “Healthcare Costs.”

The nation’s addiction to opioid drugs claimed greater than 28,000 lives in 2014-nearly four times more than they did in 1999–and more than half involved prescription drugs. The tragic growth in opioid-related deaths is not an aberration; it’s part of a 15-year-long trend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is now a “national epidemic.”

Researchers have identified numerous contributing factors related to the opioid crisis, including the changing dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship, the creation of more potent and long-acting drugs, and trends started by influential medical experts and academic societies in the late 1990s suggesting total pain control should be treated as an attainable medical ideal–the so-called “fifth vital sign.”

While these concerns are all worthy of significant attention, a seemingly harmless government survey of patient satisfaction may be one of the most overlooked and important causes behind the current opioid epidemic. The survey, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It was created in 1995 as part of the federal government’s efforts to provide consumers with objective metrics for evaluating health care service providers and to create a way to hold providers accountable for the quality of their diagnoses, treatments, communication, and the comfort provided to patients.

In 2005, the Deficit Reduction Act was passed, requiring HCAHPS scores to be used as a standardized evaluation of health care providers and systems when issuing Medicare reimbursements. Provisions contained within the Affordable Care Act in 2010 further tied reimbursement rates to HCAHPS survey results.

Proponents of these measures state that providing greater transparency for consumers and incentivizing hospitals and other providers to compete with one another simultaneously lowers costs and improves quality and patient satisfaction. But one important and detrimental unintended consequence of HCAHPS and other similar mandates is they encourage physicians and other health care professionals to place a higher value on certain measures of satisfaction–notably pain management–that may put patients at risk.

In addition to assessing the quality of communication from the health care team and the environment of a patient’s room, the HCAHPS survey asks respondents to score a provider’s success at managing pain. There are several questions completely dedicated to pain, including, “How often was your pain well controlled?” and “How often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain?”

Controlling a patient’s pain is undoubtedly a crucial part of practicing medicine, but survey questions such as this one have encouraged providers to treat patients with ever-higher dosages of opioids, the consequences of which have proven to be extremely dangerous. Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the United States has nearly quadrupled, and opioid-related deaths have risen at a similar rate over the same period. Amongst those addicted to heroin, greater than 70 percent report abusing prescription opioids prior to using heroin.

The phrase “do no harm” may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. Doctors are faced with the challenge of curing patients and treating their pain, but they must also avoid unsafe prescribing practices that could lead to drug tolerance, addiction, or both. The HCAHPS survey inadvertently adds to this dilemma by making patients’ pain management effectively more important than their long-term health.

Providers should always work to find new and effective ways to treat pain, especially now that over one-third of Americans suffer from chronic or acute pain. It is up to the health care community to become responsible stewards for this widespread problem. Providers should emphasize non-opioid classes of pain medications and other holistic strategies for pain management, as well as push for more drug-monitoring programs.

Unfortunately, achieving these goals is made much more difficult as a result of the external pressures placed on providers by government-mandated hospital score ratings such as those produced by HCAHPS, especially when they are used to determine monetary reimbursements.

GOP-Led House Ignores Dems’ Sit-In, Approves $1.1 Billion To Fight Zika

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday agreed to $ 1.1 billion to fight the Zika virus, short-changing President Barack Obama’s $ 1.9 billion funding request and angering Democrats by making other cuts to pay for it.

The House approved a funding deal that had been agreed to on Wednesday by Republicans from both the House and Senate. But the bill’s future was uncertain in the Senate, where the Democratic minority has more power to stop legislation, and Democratic leader Harry Reid has declared his opposition.

Rory McIlroy Pulls Out Of Olympics Over Zika Fears

    By Adrian Warner

LONDON (Reuters) – Northern Ireland’s four-times major winner Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out of the historic golf tournament at the Rio Olympic Games in August because of health fears over the Zika virus.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else,” the world number four said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.”

The International Golf Federation (IGF) said it was disappointed with McIlroy’s decision.

The 27-year-old was due to represent Ireland, rather than Britain, at the Games and his withdrawal is the latest blow to golf, which is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

A number of big names, including Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, have also withdrawn because of the virus.

Controversy over the Aug. 5-21 Games has grown as more becomes known about Zika. The mosquito-borne virus can cause crippling birth defects and, in adults, has been linked to the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the Games did not need to be moved or postponed because there is “a very low risk” that holding the event in Brazil will cause further spread of the virus.

An expert WHO panel on Zika concluded that staging the event during the Brazilian winter means the mosquito population will be smaller and intensified mosquito-control measures in place around venues “should further reduce the risk of transmission”.

    MIXED RESPONSE

Medical experts had a mixed response to McIlroy’s decision.

Derek Gatherer, a virus expert at Britain’s Lancaster University, said if the golfer was “contemplating becoming a father within a year or so, then it was a perfectly reasonable precaution to stay away from regions of active Zika transmission”.

But Jonathan Ball, a professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said: “Obviously I don’t know the reasons for this decision, but it does strike me as being extreme.

“The chances of being infected by the Zika virus is low, especially if you protect yourself from mosquito bites by covering up and using a good insect repellent.”

But there are clearly worries in the golf world. Earlier this month, world number one Jason Day expressed doubts for the first time over whether he would compete and the virus was a hot topic of conversation among golfers at last week’s U.S. Open.

Masters champion Danny Willett, whose wife Nicole gave birth to their first child at the end of March, said he was excited about the Olympic Games but would not to go if his family’s health was at risk.

The list of Rio absentees also includes Australian world number eight Adam Scott and South Africa’s world number 14 Louis Oosthuizen, who both opted out over scheduling conflicts.

    FROZEN SPERM

The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last year in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,400 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in mothers.

Britain’s Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford has decided to have his sperm frozen before the Games.

His partner Susie Verrill, who will not travel to Rio with their young son, said the couple had taken the precaution because they wanted to have more children.

McIlroy, who is engaged to American Erica Stoll, took a long time to decide who he would represent in Rio and threatened to skip the Olympics as he agonized over his choice between Britain and Ireland before opting for the latter in 2014.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision (not to go,” McIlroy added. “I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”

Irish golf team captain Paul McGinley said McIlroy would have been a 100 percent certain pick for the Games but fully understood the reasoning behind the player’s withdrawal.

“It’s not for me to influence his decision, it’s a health decision he has discussed with his family and wife to be,” McGinley told Irish national broadcaster RTE.

“Shane (Lowry) and GMac (Graeme McDowell) are the next two in at the moment.”

In a statement the IGF said: “(We) are disappointed with Rory’s decision but recognize that some players will have to weigh personally a unique set of circumstances as they contemplate their participation in golf’s historic return to the Olympic Games in Rio, with the Zika virus foremost among them.”

It’s time for our best leaders to have conviction again.

    2016-06-22-1466578558-2650930-jo_cox_8.jpg

In W.B. Yeats poem, the Second Coming, written in the aftermath of the First World War he introduced us to the immortal words, “things fall apart, the centre cannot hold”.

This now famous hypothesis speaks to the captivating nature of extremism from either the left or the right of society always being able to capture more sycophantic followers than a more moderate existence and narrative.

Yeats explains this as “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity”. This is playing out all over the world every day and is the great tension within the evolution of humanity in the 21st Century. However it is how it has manifested itself in both the US’s presidential campaign as well as the extremes of the UK’s BREXIT debate that are most striking to me personally. The “passionate intensity” has been on display in full force on both sides of the Atlantic, with more centred leaders, natural bridge builders shying away from politics and representation of any form.

They instead apply their talents to the, relatively speaking, calmer waters of building business, innovating and working in the front line on the mounting list of causes that the world now faces. Climate change, mass population migration, the evolution of capitalism being the often-defining nexus of all these issues. Approaching this nexus from the perspective of business transformation is where most of my peers choose to focus with a lesser number leading within NGOs with no lack of conviction but without the resources of business or in most cases the spotlight of political life.
This is what makes the murder of Jo Cox so hard to fathom. Brendan’s wife and Mom to two beautiful children stood within that spotlight with grace and promise. The ex Labour Party Leader, Neil Kinnock described her as a Day Star. In time there was no doubt she was on course to help lead parties, build bridges, have all the resources needed and direct them to those who needed them most, and ensure the buy in and gratitude of all. She would reclaim the centre from the left or the right. Jo was conviction personified.

The fact that Brendan and the world has lost her to a deranged individual effected by the “passionate intensity” of the far right is the greatest travesty I’ve seen in my years in the UK.

However in the days since Jo’s murder I’ve seen something that has been quite softly reassuring, and provides an undercurrent to the grief and introspection as to the how’s and why’s of Jo’s murder. The centre is waking up to a mass realisation that our communities and airwaves have been hostage to extremist leaders who seek to create distance with our neighbours and division in our societies. Conviction is returning to those who are best placed to honour Jo’s legacy with belief and actions that amplify her values.

I hope it’s enough to help discourage the progressive hold of extremist views towards a realisation that we have More in Common with our neighbours than we think (or have been told) and that this effects positively our communities, families and relationships with our neighbours..

I know for Brendan and the kids nothing will ever be enough but for the rest of us it’s time to rediscover our conviction and lead humanity towards its united potential and back from the extremes and distrust of the edges.

    ADVICE 25: I’m Dating A Married Man

    *****

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

To submit a question, fill out this impossibly brief Google form, then come back and read today’s answer…

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?
    Jlag0307; Orlando, FL

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Lots Of Parents Are Naming Babies After Clinton, Trump… And ‘Hamilton”

It seems that this year’s presidential election is influencing parents in ways beyond political activism and baby fashion choices. Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are apparently providing baby name inspiration as well.

BabyCenter analyzed the roughly 115,000 baby names registered on the site and found that the name Hillary increased 142 percent in popularity since this time last year. The names Bill, Chelsea and Charlotte rose 113 percent, 18 percent and 17 percent respectively.

According to a press release from BabyCenter, the name Donald also rose in popularity but only by eight percent. Melania is up 36 percent, and Ivanka increased by four percent.

Bernie Sanders does not appear to have had the same effect, as the name Bernard fell 50 percent, and no new baby Bernies appeared in the BabyCenter database.

“A presidential election is a big deal, and new parents who choose names like Hillary and Donald are placing a bet that their new baby will share the name of the next American president,” Linda Murray, BabyCenter Global Editor in Chief, stated in the press release.

“In a sense, they’re already voting for their favorite candidate. Time will tell whether they picked a winner or the next John Kerry or Mitt Romney,” she added.

BabyCenter’s analysis also found some potential baby name influence in the hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton.” Since last June, the name Hamilton has increased almost 60 percent in popularity. Meanwhile Jefferson is up 171 percent, James rose 25 percent, George increased by 21 percent and Maria is up almost 22 percent.

“The combination of ‘Hamilton’s’ success and the election year has parents feeling patriotic,” Murray explained, adding, “When parents reach into history to select a leader’s name for their child, it’s usually because they feel inspired by that person’s values and legacy. The Broadway show’s multi-ethnic, cross-culture story speaks to millennial parents. Hamilton is the new Lincoln or Madison.”

Vaclav Havel: Civic Responsibility in the Postmodern Age

More than any other public figure, VOclav Havel has reflected on the opportunities and dilemmas facing humankind as a result of the Communism''s collapse. His life serves as an example of responsible and moral action, even at the cost of much personal suffering. In the first book to bring together Havel''s life and work, James Pontuso examines the Czech president''s political philosophy. Pontuso argues that Havel''s life as a dissident and political leader, his political writings, and his plays are part of a whole and must be understood as intimately connected to one another. In this engaging work, Pontuso skillfully explores these connections and explains Havel''s prescriptions for political life.

Samantha Bee Explains Why The GOP Can’t Disown Donald Trump’s Racism

Donald Trump’s racism isn’t anything new for the GOP, despite what the “orange supremacist” may think.

Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee broke down the Republican Party’s history to explain why the bigoted rhetoric spouted by its presumptive presidential nominee wasn’t actually a novelty.

“Trump isn’t desecrating the Republican Party,” she said. “He’s just peeling back the glossy exterior to reveal the hideous symbiont that’s been lurking there for decades.”

Bee clarified that she didn’t think “all racists are Republican” or that “all Republicans are racists.” But she did say that the party had relied on an uneasy coalition between “fiscal conservatives” and “resentful whites” to win elections.

Using a “Breaking Bad” analogy, she likened the GOP/Trump match to Walter White teaming up with white supremacists to expand his meth-dealing business — only the partnership soon turned sour when the racist faction took control.

Bee ended the segment with a serious question for Republicans: “So GOP, the time has come to decide, do you want that beast living in your house or not?”

Check it out in the clip above.

    Life Lessons From King James

    2016-06-20-1466459952-8369230-lebrondunkklay.jpg

LeBron James might or might not be the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a pointless discussion, for now, because his career isn’t even close to being over.

He’s probably cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time – 3 championships, 3 Finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, and defeating a 73-9 team in the Finals after being down 3-1 while leading everybody in everything and bringing a championship to a city that hasn’t seen one in 52 years will do that.

I have to admit something though. After game 4 – after an odd and frustratingly passive performance from LeBron James, I’d given up on him. I just didn’t think he could do it. LeBron wasn’t playing like the absolute best version of LeBron – which the Cavs needed him to do if they were even going to have a chance – and the next game was at Golden State.

I thought it was over. And I thought it was LeBron’s fault. And I was irrationally angry and upset.

There’s a quote from former NFL coach Bill Parcells that I like:

    “You are what you are.”

I thought Game 4 LeBron was LeBron. Passive, not quite willing to do what it takes, a waste of potential. I know – he was already a two-time champion. But two-time champions are supposed to play like two-time champions, aren’t they? And he wasn’t. He was playing like someone less than that.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. But I will anyway.

Back to back 41-point games, when scoring isn’t even the thing he does best. Three straight wins against the greatest regular season team of all time, a team that hadn’t lost 3 in a row all season. Two wins on the road, in a building where the Warriors went 39 – 2 in the regular season. Leading everybody in everything – points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, which was literally unheard of. His stats in the last three games: 36.3 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 9.7 assists per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 3.0 steals per game.

Game 5 to 7 LeBron had clearly, well and truly, undeniably vanquished Game 4 LeBron.

Because he had to. Because if winning meant more to him than anything else, including being “himself”, he had to.

It’s like that quote from Henry Sidwick:

“One has to kill a few of one’s natural selves to let the rest grow — a very painful slaughter of innocents.”

And this is what LeBron said after the game, about coming back to Cleveland two years ago, knowing the team had never even been to the playoffs before:

“I told myself, ‘Bron, you gotta be patient’… but I’m not a patient guy.”

He didn’t say he could be patient. Or that he should be patient. Or that he wants to be patient.

He said he had to be patient.

Which meant he had to be something he hadn’t been.

Because his goal – “I set a goal to bring a championship back to the city of Cleveland” – meant more to him than remaining who he was.

I could learn from that. Maybe I’ll have to learn from that.

Here’s what else we have to learn from LeBron James:

“I gave everything that I had. I put my heart and my blood and my sweat and my tears into this game.”

How often do you do that? When I think about that sentence, I honestly kind of doubt it. Can anyone literally give everything they have to anything? I don’t know. Maybe I doubt that anyone could do it because I doubt that I could do it. But I’ve probably, realistically, only felt this way a few times in my whole life. Even though it’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever had.

“I think about all the doubters. Even with what I’ve been able to do in my career, I still have the same doubters.”

Really, it’s insane that one of the greatest players ever, a three-time champion, a four-time MVP, has doubters. It’s not logical, it’s emotional. Nobody’s career has been scrutinised like LeBron’s – it started when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, and it hasn’t stopped since. He has, somehow, against all odds, been even greater than his hype. And people still doubt him. If he still has doubters, then you do too, and you always will.

“During the playoffs, I get off social media. I don’t watch TV. I don’t listen to the radio. Because at the end of the day, the game is won in between these four lines. You can have everybody else talking, everybody else saying what’s going to happen… but the game is won in between these four lines.”

Let everybody else talk. Let them say who’s going to win and who isn’t. Let them gossip about who’s better and who can’t rise to the occasion and who will fail. None of it matters. Not at all. Save your energy for your work.

    “I’m my biggest critic.”

If you’re your biggest critic then nobody else can harm you. Your opinion of you means more to you than their opinion of you, so how could they harm you? Their words are just noise – sometimes distracting, but never compelling.

“You practice it every day. Just trust in what you’ve put into the game.”

I worry so much about my writing sometimes. Is it good enough? What if it isn’t? How can I know it’s good enough? When will it be good enough? It’s not good enough. This is shit. Nobody is going to care. And they’ll be right.

It’s exhausting. What’s the point in it? Wouldn’t I be better served by putting my energy into actually writing?

I write every day. Usually for hours. I read every day too. I put a lot of time into it. I put a lot of effort into it. I put a lot of me into it.

I need to get better at trusting myself, and I need to realise that “ego is the enemy” of trusting myself (thanks Ryan Holiday).

“We’ve been through so much adversity these last two years, so I just knew what we were capable of.”

Are you like me, in that you think you can accomplish things without any kind of adversity? I know we all “know” we’ll experience adversity. But do we actually know? Do we actually, with our whole hearts, accept it?

What would happen if we did wholeheartedly accept it? Would there be any downside to that?

Adversity makes us more of who we are because it tests who we are. If we want to get through it, we have to be more. We have to become more. We have to turn adversity to advantage.

Nobody, after they win an NBA championship, says it was easy. Nobody, after writing a book, says it was easy. Nobody, after accomplishing something they desperately wanted to accomplish, says it was easy.

They all talk about how hard it was. How many sacrifices they made. How they wondered whether or not they could actually do this thing that was looking closer and closer to being impossible.

Do you know what else they all say?

They all say it was worth it.

    “Cleveland, this is for you.”

We’re back to that cliché of a question, aren’t we.

    What’s your why?

    It’s a cliché because it’s important.

Is your why big enough to carry you into and through and beyond adversity?

Is it big enough for you to work when you don’t feel like working?

Is it big enough for you to ruthlessly kill the old versions of you that aren’t up to getting the job done?

LeBron James’ why wasn’t about LeBron James.

LeBron James’ why wasn’t even about Cleveland.

    LeBron James’ why was Cleveland.

It’s why he came back. It’s why he felt obligated to come back. It’s why he was able to will his team back from a 3-1 deficit against the greatest regular season team in NBA history. It’s why he was able to make history. It’s why he was able to do what he said he was going to do.

It’s why the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite all odds, are the 2016 NBA Champions.

An Open Letter to My Former Psychiatrist: On Being Right

    Dear Dr. Right,

You were right. Ten years ago this August, I left your office with my husband, round belly bulging with my nearly full-term first child, cursing your name. It was our first appointment together and you basically told me I was going to fail. When I explained to you that I had been off meds and symptom-free from my bipolar disorder for almost a year and that I wanted to stay off medication to breastfeed, you nodded with a sympathetic smile on your face, scribbled in your notebook and simply said we needed to have a plan.

A plan for which hospital I’d go to when I became manic to the point of needing that level of care. That level of care that you were so sure I’d need.

    You were right.

At that stage of my fight, Dr. Right, I was still in denial about the fact that I had been diagnosed with a mental illness. I thought maybe, just maybe, since I had nearly a full year of stability without meds, the past had been a misdiagnosis. Perhaps those eight psychiatrists I had seen over the years since my two hospitalizations for mania were all wrong. I mean, I hadn’t experienced any significant episodes of depression or mania since 2006 and most importantly, I felt solid and stable. Didn’t that count for anything?

Didn’t that make me normal again?

I was so excited to be a mom and every spare moment I had was spent preparing for this new little life who would soon enter the world. His crib was set up, clothes had been washed and lovingly put away, and diapers and wipes sat waiting on the changing table in his nursery. One of the last things on my list was meeting with you, a psychiatrist who agreed to treat me without medication for the remainder of my pregnancy and beyond, according to my wishes.

Man, am I glad we met when we did. Because you were so right. And when the time came, four weeks after his birth, when the compounded lack of sleep and absence of meds in my bloodstream caught up to me in the form of full-blown postpartum psychosis, my husband had someone to call for help.

    He called you.

How terrifying it must have been for him to see me unravel the way I did. How helpless he must have felt watching me slowly lose touch with reality, my eyes glazing over, unable to focus on the simplest task of taking a shower or eating a bowl of cereal. And when the psychosis reached its peak, he saw me scrambling to pull together every journal I had ever written in, piling them up before the blazing gas fireplace in our family room like an offering before I died. My legacy, scrawled in ink for my son to read someday since in my mind, I wasn’t going to make it back to the surface. I was hurling to the depths of hell which to me felt like being dragged to the floor of the ocean, my ankles cuffed with a ball and chain pulling me to the bottom. I was sinking faster than I could breathe. And I was so scared it was my day to die and I’d never see my baby again.

Mania to the point of psychosis can do this to a person.

I was taken under a Temporary Detention Order to the Emergency Room where I was held handcuffed to the bed. The doctors and nurses eventually determined I was a threat to myself or others and the green light was given to find me a bed. I was lucky, beds aren’t always available, as the Deeds’ family tragedy unfortunately proved. I only had to wait overnight and the next morning I was transferred to our local hospital’s geriatric psych ward, the only open bed in the surrounding area.

I made it through. It wasn’t easy, in fact, it was pretty awful being in a psych ward for a week of my new baby’s life. My mental illness had landed a forceful blow to the gut, showing me it was in control of my body. Still, wandering the halls at night I’d stumble, groggy from the antipsychotics, to the nurses station to ask for another dose of whatever sleeping pill they could give me. I knew sleep was my friend in there. After a week, I got well with your help, and with support from my husband and family.

Once home, I focused on getting stable. I followed my treatment plan and took my meds religiously. Then it happened again. I thought I knew what was best for my next baby. I didn’t. Acute mania reared its ugly head to the point of psychosis, repeating the nightmare a year and a half later when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter because I had stopped my medication.

You were right again. At five weeks pregnant I landed in the psych ward again.

Those days are tough for me to look back on, the times I was in the hospital and the weeks and months of recovery afterwards. But I wouldn’t trade them for anything because they are a part of who I am now and they tell the story of how I’ve evolved. Those slices of my life do not define me, but when added into everything else that makes me the person I am today, I am grateful for those agonizing, terrifying, heart-wrenching experiences.

You are the expert when it comes to psychiatry, Dr. Right. Me, I’m just the patient. During one of our sessions, I brought up whether or not to disclose my mental illness, and I asked for your opinion. Of course only I could make that call. You expressed the same sadness that so many in this world share over the injustice mentally ill people experience when they expose their conditions. I was looking for justification that it would be okay if I wrote openly about what I had been through, but I didn’t get that from you. In fact, you recommended that I keep my illness hidden, lest I be discriminated upon because of it. Once more, it was as if I were hearing “destined to fail” all over again.

Good thing I didn’t listen that time.

I’m writing now, Dr. Right. Remember when I told you I wanted to write a book? Well, I still do, but first I’ve started self-publishing online, to gain experience. I have a blog, and over the past two years my readership has grown tremendously, all organically, due to my dedication to sharing my story in order to help others.

I’ve met so many incredible people through blogging and social media. It blows my mind how I can write about the struggles I’ve gone through and in return, I get emails from people saying, “Me too!” and “Thank you so much for being so brave.” My heart is blissfully content because I know I’ve uncovered my purpose in life and my words are having an impact on people, a positive impact. I can feel it. And every time I put my thoughts out there for the world to read, my voice grows a little stronger.

I’ve created a show and non-profit organization called This Is My Brave where others like me who live with mental illness can stand up on stage and share our personal stories, our suffering and our breakthroughs, the hope we’ve found in long-term recovery. This is our chance to show the world our vulnerability in an effort to raise awareness and acceptance.

For years after I was handed my diagnosis I feared the backlash of people who knew me finding out about my mental illness. Conversations were uncomfortable, I cared too much about what other people thought of me. It didn’t take me very long to realize that living in fear is not really living. Taking off my armor and choosing to expose myself and my story was one of the best decisions I ever made about my mental health and my life in general.

Revealing my vulnerability freed me to follow my dreams.

And I have you to thank. Thank you for being right. Thank you for letting me fall. Thank you for being there when I needed you. Finally, thank you for doubting me and advising me to stay silent. Because I needed my chance to prove someone wrong and you were that person for me.

    Respectfully yours,
Jennifer Marshall (your patient from 2008-2011)

The cause of much of the recent hyperbole: The current dispiriting presidential campaign where there is a premium on extreme assertions combined with cable TV “news” stations where stories are always “breaking.” Though what’s usually breaking is a lot of wind.

More interesting is the fact that in modernity “disaster” has become more popular. A Google Ngram result shows that the frequency of the word’s appearance in texts has more than doubled since 1800. Have there been more disasters in the past 200 years than there were in the previous two millennia of recorded history? Unlikely. The destruction of Pompeii, the Black Plague and the Lisbon Earthquake were pretty damn bad. All were catastrophes that involved great damage and loss of life. That, by the way, is what the word actually means.

In a sense there are more disasters now than there once were. They are now tied to human constructions and not only natural events alone. Because of the sheer complexity of human life with the advent of industrialization the risks have vastly intensified and diversified. We are far more reliant on imperfect machines and artificial systems than were our ancestors, and we often live in places and in ways that exacerbate these risks, like tall buildings on coastlines connected by electrical grids.

Perhaps the increasing frequency of the use of this work reflects these realities, as well as our unconscious appreciation of our vulnerability. Especially in industrialized countries one price of our far greater comfort, longevity, wealth and leisure time is the fragility of it all. The precautionary principle is related to disasters that take place as a result of human artifice, like the Bhopal gas tragedy in India. So gradually the word has come to have a more general reference than natural events.

But are the policies or actions of political figures really the “disaster” that their adversaries claim? Hardly. When the word is used that way we are meant to associate to tsunamis or collapsing buildings. The trouble is that if a word is used too loosely it may begin to lose its impact. If a point of view is thought to cause just as much harm as an earthquake or terrorist bombing these real disasters could come to seem less harmful.

And that would be a calamity.

9 Signs Your Perfectionism Is Out Of Control

    2016-05-27-1464382790-3237314-9SignsYourPerfectionismIsOutOfControlHP.jpg

We live in a world that idolizes perfectionism. From a very young age, parents, coaches, and teachers push us to be high achievers, but they fail to teach us balance. We live our lives with an ingrained desire to give our all in pursuit of lofty goals, but we don’t know when to pull back. We don’t know when enough actually is enough.

Most people lean hard into their perfectionism–they extol it as a virtue to the point that it becomes a vice. Doing so is troubling because separate studies from the University of British Columbia and the University of Tehran show that perfectionism is linked to depression, anxiety, and a slew of mental health issues.

To defeat perfectionism, you have to learn to spot when it’s holding you back. This task is difficult because perfectionistic tendencies like to hide under the guise of hard work and zeal.

Tal Ben-Shahar suggests that you shift your mentality from that of a perfectionist to that of an optimalist. Optimalists strive just as hard for success, but they’re more flexible, resilient, and adaptive in the pursuit of their goals.

    2016-05-27-1464382831-9644820-9SignsYourPerfectionismIsOutOfControlHP2.jpg

Shifting your approach from perfectionism to optimalism is bound to make you happier and more productive. First, you need to recognize the signs of perfectionism that’s holding you back. What follows are the hallmarks of perfectionism that has gotten out of control.

    1. You recognize that your perfectionism is a problem, but you think that’s what it takes to be successful. Sometimes, you really need to push yourself hard to be successful. When your perfectionism gets out of control, using hard work as the justification for the unnecessary pain and suffering you endure is easy. Make no mistake about it, perfectionism does create unnecessary struggle and strife. When you get your perfectionism under control, you can work less and get more done.

    2. You get defensive when receiving feedback.
Perfectionists care deeply about what other people think of them, and this can make feedback hard to take. Even well-presented, useful feedback feels like a needle to the eye. You likely catch yourself acting defensively before you even realize that you take issue with the feedback. It’s a knee-jerk reaction. As a perfectionist, you naturally have an intense desire to succeed. Take comfort in the fact that feedback (even brutal feedback) is ultimately helping you improve your work. Take it in stride, and feedback will actually help you get closer to perfection.

    3. However, you’re critical of others. Considering their inability to receive criticism, perfectionists sure can dish it out. Perfectionists can’t help but measure themselves against other people, so taking someone down a notch, especially if that person is a threat, feels good. Though, this isn’t always the reason. Perfectionists are also critical of others because they compare them to the same unobtainable standard to which they compare themselves.

    4. You procrastinate all the time.
Perfectionism and fear of failure go hand in hand. This combination leads to procrastination because even mundane tasks are intimidating when they must be completed perfectly. Most writers spend countless hours brainstorming characters and plot, and they even write page after page that they know they’ll never include in the book. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when it’s time to get started because we know that our ideas aren’t perfect and what we produce might not be any good. However, how can you ever produce something great if you don’t get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly: “You can edit a bad page, but you can’t edit a blank page.”

    5. You have a guilty conscience. Perfectionists have a steady stream of guilty thoughts running through their minds, because they’re always feeling like they’re coming up short. This guilt elevates stress, and it can easily spiral into depression and anxiety. Guilt is fueled by your self-talk. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that–thoughts, not facts. When you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, it’s time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what you’re doing and write down what you’re thinking. Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you’ll be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity.

    6. You take mistakes personally. Perfectionists take their work so seriously that they tend to overestimate the impact of their mistakes. Minor events can cause them to experience bitter disappointment. This issue is significant because it makes you less resilient, and the ability to bounce back from failure is critical to success. Perfectionists must learn that failure is not a confirmation that they aren’t good enough.

    7. You take pleasure in other people’s failures. This little known secret of perfectionists is not as evil as it sounds. Misery loves company, and perfectionists can’t help but find satisfaction in knowing that other people experience the same frustrations as they do. These moments of relief are short lived, and they make perfectionists feel bad for being so competitive.

    8. You’re afraid to take risks. With the fear of failure comes the fear of taking risks. Perfectionists’ hard work, research, and attention to detail produce novel ideas. Unfortunately, their great ideas are often placed on the back burner because of their fear of risk. The only way to get comfortable with taking risks is to take risks. Starting the process is never easy, but by actively leaning into the very things that make us uncomfortable, we build confidence and realize that it’s never as bad as we build it up in our minds to be.

    9. You live in fear of rejection. Perfectionists need the approval of others to feel successful. This mentality leads to a crippling fear of rejection. Perfectionists dread things, such as asking for a raise or pursuing their passions in lieu of something that will win approval from others. Living in fear of rejection feels terrible, stifles creativity, and slows down your progression as a person. Whenever you find yourself overly concerned with what other people think of you, remember Dr. Seuss’s take on authenticity: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

    Bringing It All Together

To beat perfectionism, you need to be the most authentic version of yourself you can be. This means pursuing the things you love, trusting that hard work will pay off, learning from your mistakes, and deriving satisfaction from within.

What are some other signs of perfectionism that has gotten out of hand? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below; I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

    Clinical Trials: an Odyssey

    2016-06-19-1466378082-9954211-CTGulnara.JPG

A map of clinical trials for melanoma around the world. For 336 studies in the USA, 155 in Western Europe and 33 in China, there are only 8 in Russia. Source: ClinicalTrials.gov.

Let me tell you about a hobby that I have. What do I do when I have a minute to spare? Well, I stalk doctors. Researchers, too. Compliance managers. Assistance staff. Anyone I can get hold of, basically. A soft cajoler. A smiling harasser. Sounds fun? I know.

The sad truth is that I help find clinical trials for seriously ill patients from Russia. I’m filling a gap that ought to be catered for by the state healthcare system. I help a colleague help patients on their way to treatment – and life, in many cases. If you win an Olympic medal for Russia, the government gives you the keys to a new Mercedes and $ 52,000 to $ 120,000 in cash (a present that the taxpayers, effectively, pay for). If you get cancer, as could happen to anybody, the government turns its back on you. Does it sympathize only with those of its citizens who are healthy, I wonder?

It is a lonely battle. You’ll have to plot and scheme to find ways to get expensive medications from abroad. Take Keytruda, a new drug highly effective against various tumors, including melanoma. A vial sells for $ 2,520, which is 6 median monthly salaries of a taxpayer in Russia as of January 2016 (27,500 rubles, or $ 420, after tax). The bad news is that the medication will only last a couple of weeks. You’ll have to try and get the drug and/or treatment under a state quota, explaining over and over again in different offices what is clear as daylight – that you have cancer and are therefore entitled to state-funded care.

Adding to the problem, newer and better drugs are often registered with several years’ delay, and as such are not even available to patients in Russia. Enrollment in clinical trials often becomes a way to connect the patients with the best doctors, medications and medical care.

Clinical trials have taken me to regions I’d never even dreamed of. They got me in contact with Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway. They got me to speak Italian and write Spanish (I never studied either). They got me exchanging up to 400 e-mails per case. They got me talking to suave Italian doctors, calling on behalf of frantic patients because sometimes, even though you’ve taken care of everything, the patient still can lose his way in a clinic 3,000 km away from you. They got me fuming when a patient forgot the biopsy results at a clinic abroad. They got me talking to a female patient who said matter-of-factly that her liver was so enlarged she was mistaken for pregnant.

Clinical trials have taught me to persevere. Diplomatic and quiet by nature, in my regular life I find it difficult to insist or even ask for something. With clinical trials, you almost always have to stand your ground. Doctors, trials administrators – everyone is busy. E-mails go unanswered, phone calls aren’t taken, the patient’s condition is not getting any better, and valuable time slips away. You have to be a bit of a bulldog and refuse to be shaken off or sidetracked.

Don’t be afraid of gatecrashing. Don’t just knock on doors – knock them down if you have to. Keep every contact for the future, and then use it. Call the clinic every day until someone responds.

At the end of the day, it is invariably fascinating to see how the conversation moves from online to offline, and an exchange of messages in the virtual world secures real medications for a real person. It is very satisfying to join hands across the globe, even if the story does not have a happy ending. Like that of the lady with the formerly enlarged liver. She underwent treatment in Italy, which worked very well at the start. Unfortunately, she passed away, but the Italian program awarded her almost a year of life with her two young kids.

For the next few weeks, I picked up a new hobby – making lists of contact persons at major pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers. Sounds exciting? I know. Here’s to a fun summer season.

Pobre Raza!: Violence, Justice, and Mobilization among Mxico Lindo Immigrants, 1900-1936

Fleeing the social and political turmoil spawned by the Mexican Revolution, massive numbers of Mexican immigrants entered the southwestern United States in the early decades of the twentieth century. But instead of finding refuge, many encountered harsh, anti-Mexican attitudes and violence from an Anglo population frightened by the influx of foreigners and angered by anti-American sentiments in Mexico. This book examines the response of Mexican immigrants to Anglo American prejudice and violence early in the twentieth century. Drawing on archival sources from both sides of the border, Arturo Rosales traces the rise of “Mxico Lindo” nationalism and the efforts of Mexican consuls to help poor Mexican immigrants defend themselves against abuses and flagrant civil rights violations by Anglo citizens, police, and the U.S. judicial system. This research illuminates a dark era in which civilian and police brutality, prejudice in the courtroom, and disproportionate arrest, conviction, and capital punishment rates too often characterized justice for Mexican Americans.

    Mourning and mobilizing

This month, Americans will show that love is stronger than hate. Millions will take part in celebrations of LGBT pride, and Muslims will fast as they observe the holy month of Ramadan. Just last week, we remembered those gunned down at a Charleston Bible study a year ago–killed by one man, but loved and missed by countless others.

And in the coming days, mourners will attend funerals, memorial services and vigils for loved ones murdered at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, most of whom were gay and Latino.

Undoubtedly, in the weeks to come, the ugly rhetoric about bathroom bills, building walls, and barring people of an entire faith from entering this country will continue. Muslim women who wear the hijab may wonder if that is tantamount to a target.

Patrons of gay establishments may worry, as churchgoers did after Charleston, that sanctuaries where they had felt joy, community and the comfort of being themselves are now unsafe. And no doubt, there will be more gun deaths–an average of 90 people die from gun shots each day in the United States, vastly more than in any other developed country. This is madness.

Republicans acceded to Sen. Chris Murphy’s remarkable filibuster last week calling for votes on gun legislation, but then they vowed to defeat the measures. The best hope of addressing America’s gun problem lies with the majority of Americans, including gun owners, who support stricter gun regulations.

We must call out the hypocrisy when elected officials offer condolences after gun violence in one breath and defend civilians’ right to own weapons of war in the next. With each successive mass shooting, I have grown convinced that a massive civic crusade on the order of the civil rights movement is necessary to force the hands of the gun lobby and their allies in elected offices.

    This must end.

The aim of the Orlando attack was to murder people like me, an LGBT American. So this is personal. But gun massacres have also taken place in schools, theaters, malls, churches, synagogues and office buildings. This must be personal for all of us.

We may never fully eradicate the hatred and instability that drove the shooters in Newtown, Aurora, Charleston, San Bernadino and Orlando. But we can and must do two things: take a stand against the hateful rhetoric that is seeping into American life, and address the easy availability of weapons that transforms haters into mass murderers.

Such rhetoric is spilling over from the relative confines of conservative talk radio into the daily discourse of a man seeking the country’s highest elected office. Donald Trump’s run for the presidency is about stoking hatred and division, without even the pretense of decency. He has mocked and mimicked a reporter’s physical disability and exhibited reprehensible misogyny. He has renewed his call to bar Muslims from entering the United States and suggested that President Obama is sympathetic to ISIS. He has promoted the use of violence against peaceful protesters with calls to “beat the crap out of them.”

Unfortunately, this ugliness is being mimicked in American life, with chants of “build the wall!” directed toward students from a predominantly Latino school, and with students tormenting classmates from immigrant families by saying they’ll be sent “home” if Trump becomes president. One columnist calls it the “Trump effect.

This is alarming, but our public schools also offer hope. They help break down stereotypes and help promote understanding and respect, and celebrate, not demonize, diversity. They’re where students know their classmates as their lab partner, the photographer for the yearbook, a Yankees fan and the kid who loves to drop rap verses–rather than simply by their race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality or gender identity.

Our public schools are where children learn that differences aren’t bad. Far from it; they are part of the fabric of America, and of life. Our diversity and our work to make America more inclusive, with opportunity and justice for all, are part of what “makes America great.”

Americans must stand up against efforts to marginalize certain people and groups. We must reject mass murders as the new normal. We must denounce those who whip up fear and try to turn Americans against each other. We must be our best selves, expanding an ever-widening circle of inclusion, showing greater openness to communities once excluded. There is a role for all of us in this–working to change not only laws, but attitudes; finding new allies to fight for sensible gun legislation and against hate.

Love is stronger than hate. We must show that in the way we act, speak and vote.

5 Ways You Can Use Mindfulness To Fix Your Brain, Reduce Stress and Boost Performance

    2016-06-03-1464994315-6999836-5WaysYouCanUseMindfulnessToFixYourBrainReduceStressandBoostPerformanceHP.jpg

There’s no shortage of advice out there claiming to make you better, but mindfulness meditation is the rare, research-proven technique that boosts your performance by physically altering your brain.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia recently pooled data from more than 20 studies to understand how practicing mindfulness affects the brain. While the researchers found significant changes in eight brain regions, there are two regions that are of particular importance to you.

In these brain regions, the simple act of practicing mindfulness increased both brain activity and the density of brain tissue:

    1. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), which is responsible for self-control. It enables you to resist distractions, to focus, and to avoid impulsivity in order to work efficiently and make great decisions. The ACC is also responsible for flexibility, and people who have problems in this brain area are known to stick to ineffective problem-solving strategies when they should be adjusting their approach.
    2. The hippocampus, which, among other things, is responsible for resilience in the face of setbacks and challenges. The hippocampus is readily damaged by stress, making it a need area for most people. The hippocampus is red/orange in the image below.

    2016-06-03-1464994500-6326888-5WaysYouCanUseMindfulnessToFixYourBrainReduceStressandBoostPerformanceHP_2.jpg

Mindfulness is a simple, yet effective form of meditation that enables you to gain control of unruly thoughts and behaviors. People who practice mindfulness are more focused, even when they are not meditating. Mindfulness is an excellent technique to reduce stress because it allows you to stop feeling out of control, to stop jumping from one thought to the next, and to stop ruminating on negative thoughts. Overall, it’s a great way to make it through your busy day in a calm and productive manner.

Just as doing curls increases muscle density in your biceps, practicing mindfulness increases the density of brain matter where it counts. Mindfulness is perhaps the only technique that can change your brain in this way, which produces a ripple of other positive effects. Thankfully, you can reap the benefits of mindfulness in as little as a few minutes a day.

Gandhi was once with a group of followers who inquired about his schedule. He told them, “I need to set aside at least one hour each day to meditate.” They were vexed by this and told him, “There’s no way you have that much time!” He responded, “Well, if that’s the case, then I need to set aside two hours a day to meditate.”

Like Gandhi, you’ll soon find that mindfulness is one of very few things that are well worth your precious time, and the busier you are, the more important it is to have a clear mind if you want to be productive.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to take place in the mountains of Nepal or a weekend retreat under a vow of silence. The beauty of the technique is that it’s so simple you can do it anywhere and just about anytime.

Mindfulness is the simple act of focusing all of your attention on the present. This requires you to observe your thoughts and feelings objectively, without judgment, which helps you to awaken your experience and live in the moment. This way, life doesn’t pass you by.

I realize this might sound a bit abstract and complicated at first, but it isn’t. Here’s how you can do it, even with your busy schedule.

    1. Focus on your breathing. Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor, and spend a few minutes doing nothing but breathing slowly in and out. Focus all your attention on your breath. Feel the air travel into your mouth, down your windpipe, and into your lungs. Then feel your body shift as it pushes the air out of your lungs. When thoughts surface that distract you from your breathing, don’t worry. Just let them pass, and shift your attention back to your breathing. After some practice, you should be able to spend a few to several minutes doing nothing but immersing yourself in the act of breathing, at the expense of all the other thoughts.

    2. Go for a walk. You can also meditate just by going for a walk. All you need to do is focus on each step. Feel your legs move and your feet hit the ground. Focus solely on the act of walking and the sensations of your surroundings (the cool breeze, the hot sun, or the dog barking in the distance). When you feel other thoughts creeping into your mind, focus even harder on the sensation of walking. Focusing on something that’s second nature is refreshing because it alters your frame of mind as you turn off the never-ending stream of thoughts that normally dominate your attention. You can do the same thing when you brush your teeth, comb your hair, or eat a meal.

    3. Feel your body. You don’t even need to stop doing what you’re doing to practice mindfulness. All you have to do is focus all of your attention on what you’re doing without thinking about why you’re doing it, what you should do next, or what you should be doing. Whether it’s the gentle stroke of your fingers on the keyboard or your posture in your chair, you can direct your attention from your thoughts to your bodily sensations at the spur of the moment.

    4. Repeat one positive thing about yourself, over and over.
One of the main goals of mindfulness is to stop the steam of thoughts that cycle through your mind over and over again each day. Funnily enough, a great way to do this is to choose a short, positive message about yourself and to repeat it over and over with each breath to keep your mind on track. A great phrase of choice is “I am capable.” The simplicity keeps you grounded in the exercise and keeps other thoughts from taking over. The right phrase also builds a little confidence, which never hurts.

    5. Interrupt the stress cycle. Any moment when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck on something is the perfect moment to practice mindfulness. Just stop what you’re doing, let the thoughts go for a moment, and practice your favorite mindfulness technique (breathing, walking, or focusing on body sensations). Even a few minutes of this can make a huge difference in quieting your mind and reducing stress. You’ll be surprised how reasonable things look once you’ve taken a few moments to clear your head.

    Bringing It All Together

Nothing can improve your brain the way mindfulness meditation can. Give it a try, and you’ll be surprised where it takes you.

Have you ever tried mindfulness? What’s your favorite technique? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Easing the Transition from One Life to the Next

The following post is adapted from DEATH AND LETTING GO (Montague Press) by Ellen Tadd.

Death is an inevitable fate that everyone must face. Still, the topic of death is often avoided or denied because of fears and misunderstandings about what death actually is. When we recognize death as a continuation of life, we release fears that prevent a fuller experience of material existence.

Just as attitudes and actions in one’s material life affect the quality of that life, the attitudes and actions after death affect the quality of life in the next realm. As individuals become more conscious and responsible for the thoughts and focus they choose, they can have a greater impact on the quality and circumstances in life and after death. By addressing fears and attachments all throughout one’s life, the death process simply becomes a continuation of this same lesson and life-long practice of letting go.

There are many different types of death experiences. These mirror the attachments, fears, and aspirations of each individual. When leaving the physical body, aspiring to spiritual qualities such as compassion, forgiveness, or truth propels an individual into an expansive force of light and ecstasy. On the other hand, if a person is immersed in fear, regret, guilt, or disappointment, he or she may become anchored in density after death. This can manifest as being “earth-bound” (caught in earth experiences while in spiritual form), or becoming trapped in limited or “lower vibrational” realms, which are restrictive and confining. Such experiences can last for a long period of time. Unfortunately, it is difficult for guides in spiritual dimensions to help these people because guides are unable to usurp free will and enter the density caused by negative attitudes. Therefore, earth-bound or confined individuals stuck in lower realms must let go of attachments to the past and focus on positive thoughts and feelings in order for guides and helpers to reach them.

When letting go occurs in the after-death state, an expansion of consciousness and an energetic lightness develop in the non-physical body. This feels and appears to me like a balloon that has been trapped and freed to rise up into the higher spheres. Access to enlightened individuals who reside in these higher realms then becomes available. These beings offer comfort and insight about the last life on earth, as well as teaching attitudes favorable for spiritual growth and personal fulfillment in future lives.

I have come to recognize that people’s experiences after death are as varied as their experiences in the physical world. It has been fascinating to study through clairvoyance the attitudes and circumstances involved in a desirable death versus a painful and confused one. My hope is that this book will help people move through fears and apprehensions surrounding death which inhibit enjoyment of life on earth and quality of life after death. Also, I will provide information that can prevent people from becoming trapped in lower realms, once life in the material world has been completed. Finally, I wish to communicate to loved ones left behind, that relationships do not end because we die. Love, support, and ideas can be exchanged between individuals in the physical and spiritual realms.

We all must address this topic at one stage or another in our lives, whether through the death of a loved one, helping a friend accept a death in their family, or confronting our own time to leave the body. My experiences have taught me that knowledge about death can dissipate fear and aid in a successful passing into the spiritual world. At the time of death, a comfortable, illumined, and expansive transition from one life to the next is available to everyone.

Bill Maher Calls Out Donald Trump’s Response To Orlando Shooting

Bill Maher took Donald Trump to task over his appalling response to the Orlando shooting on Friday.

The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host said the presumptive GOP nominee’s horrific reaction to the massacre at the Pulse nightclub exposed him for exactly what he is — selfish and narcissistic.

And Maher claimed it had done Trump’s presidential campaign a whole lot of damage, because people were finally seeing the billionaire businessman’s true side.

“I see it as, this was the week it ended,” said Maher. “I don’t think I’m the only one, because most of the Republicans who were caught on camera this week basically said, ‘I don’t want to talk about it.”

“The judge thing looked selfish. There is no constituency for Trump University except for Donald Trump,” Maher told the audience, in reference to Trump’s obnoxious treatment of Judge Gonzalo Curiel.

“And then the first thing out of his mouth after Orlando was, ‘I was right.’ He looks like what he is — a narcissist,” Maher added.

Watch Friday night’s full clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

    What an evening
    I just had
    My car broke down
    was truly bad …

    It happened
    on a rainy day
    With no assistance
    on my way …

    The Friday traffic
    was so thick
    When suddenly
    I heard a click …

    Then soon a cluck
    a clock a clack
    The sounds just coming
    front and back …

    Was this A
    Punctured Tire OR
    Some loose equipment?
    Open Door ??

    I searched and looked
    yet all the while
    Just thinking
    of the many miles …

    I still needed
    To get back home
    By then it felt
    I lived in Rome !!!

    For soon a tunnel
    way too long
    My mind I calmed
    though barely strong …

    Just praying that
    The Dark would clear
    For can’t imagine
    all my Fear …

    If Only Then
    My Car would stop
    My Tire burst
    My Engine pop …

    I’d be stuck right
    within my track
    No moving forwards
    turning back …

    No getting out
    to check my state
    The cars beside me
    plate by plate …

    Just zooming at
    their highest speed
    The mileage sign !!
    Can someone read ?? …

    Then slowly
    at a turtle’s pace
    I finally see
    A clear grey space …

    An Opening
    the tunnels end
    My house would be
    just past the bend …

    When suddenly
    a final jolt
    As if had lost
    a major bolt …

    My car just stopped
    refusing to
    Do anything
    I asked to do …

    But luckily
    the roadside clear
    I thank you yet
    my darling dear …

    At least we aren’t
    blocking all
    The speeding cars
    both big and small …

    So called the guys
    who came and towed
    My little car
    up off the road …

    Straight to the workshop
    need to mend
    For Been neglecting
    My Best Friend !

    Although the Doc
    had told me so
    The many things
    I ought to know …

    A small change here
    a small fix there
    I couldn’t find time
    A n y w h e r e …

    Just left it thinking
    It’s ok
    Until Ofcourse
    thus came TODAY …

    My Nissan saying
    That’s Enough
    Can’t keep pretending
    I’m that tough …

    I need my rest
    My Breaktime too
    We all must have
    a day in lieu …

    To just unwind
    To just relax
    Not Doing Dashing
    Taxing back …

    So now I have
    No Car to drive
    But it’s ok
    I will survive …

    Will pick her up
    when alls been done
    This weekend though
    might have to RUN !

Flint, Michigan Water Risks Will Be Long Term, EPA Warns

The city of Flint faces multiple long-term threats to its water supply, even though short-term progress has been made in reducing lead contamination in the drinking water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has warned the city and the state of Michigan.

The poor water quality became a crisis last year when, after months of citizen complaints in the largely poor and African-American city, officials acknowledged a problem and began corrective measures.

EPA administrator Gina McCarthy outlined at least five areas that would require additional funding and attention to ensure a safe and sustainable drinking water supply in a letter sent to Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

The letter, dated Thursday, noted that short-term efforts have produced “hopeful and encouraging signs” but that significant long-term challenges remain, such as the need for more money, a reliable city administration, and a decision on what Flint’s long-term water source should be.

In addition, the city’s water treatment plant is inadequately staffed and the distribution system is oversized, which lessens the effectiveness of chlorine used to treat pathogens, the letter said.

“The time has come for the city and the state to address those challenges. Safe drinking water cannot be reliably achieved without tackling those challenges,” McCarthy said.

Flint’s mayor on Friday agreed with many of the EPA’s conclusions and said additional funding from the state was needed to comply.

“We not only need new pipes, we need new infrastructure,” Weaver said in a statement. “That’s money that must come from the state.”

The state has provided more than $ 234 million for Flint’s water crisis in the past nine months, a spokeswoman for the governor said.

“We continue to work closely with the city and the federal government to find solutions to challenges residents face, including a long-term water source,” Press Secretary Anna Heaton said.

Flint was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager in April 2014 when it switched its source of water from Detroit’s municipal system to the Flint River to save money.

The river water was more corrosive than Detroit system’s and caused more lead to leach from its aging pipes. Lead can be toxic and children are especially vulnerable. The city switched back in October after blood tests found lead in some children.

    Dad’s Deserve a Real Gift

Since my Dad passed on a few years ago I don’t shop for Father’s Day anymore. But every time I go to my local mall, I’m struck by the number of dads pushing strollers or holding their kids’ hands as families troll for merchandise.

When I was a kid, that scene would have been unheard of. Dads worked for pay, moms tended children (even if they also had jobs),and the two worlds rarely intersected except at the dinner table. To paraphrase the Virginia Slims marketing slogan of the ’60s, we’ve come a long way with babies.

Still, our cultural norms are stuck in the past. We remain loyal to the assumption of maternal ownership of children. Stroller-pushing dads notwithstanding, men still get short shrift from the workplace and society in general when it comes to sharing the joys and burdens of raising kids.

All this is not to say new mothers have it made. While new parents in every other industrialized 2016-01-09-1452357911-7612339-YourVoice_2016Amazon.jpg country on the planet get a paid break, usually mandated by law, the vast majority of employers in the good ol’ U S of A offer zero paid leave for moms or dads. We have no national policy or law mandating paid leave for new parents. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a measly 12% of employees in the United States have access to paid leave for any care of family members, including newborns and adopted children.

Precious few employers offer time off with pay to new moms, and of the 17% that do grant dads the same benefit it’s almost always for less time. Companies offering fully paid maternity and paternity leave on Working Mother Magazine’s 100 Best list give an average of 9 weeks to moms — but only 3 weeks to dads.

We know it takes women a couple of weeks to recover physically from childbirth, so when paid leave is offered, some difference is expected. But companies need to give men a better break. Moms can use the help, and dads need time with the new kid too.

Attempts to get men to take more responsibility for children have always been at the core of the struggle for equal rights for women, in and out of the home. But even as individual families grow more egalitarian, the effort most often ends at the workplace door. We cannot urge men to spend more time with their children without recognizing that both our corporate system and our culture virtually guarantee the opposite outcome for too many families.

How to Get Over Your Breakup – Without Playing the Villain

You’re all torn up, but you’re finally ready to let go of a past love… Until those nagging thoughts intrude again, and suddenly what is true and what is false are shaken up. Your mind becomes a blur. You phone a friend or two for advice. You can’t remember why you called. You find yourself agreeing with them, even though you know that what they’re saying is wrong. You’re angry and primed for attack.

Whether it’s a divorce or long term relationship, or a friendship that falls apart, the deadly poison of revenge becomes our ugly destiny.

Revenge is by definition hostile. And when it rears its ugly head, the walls we have built with our mind collapse and our boundaries break down and disappear, putting us in a position to do what we normally wouldn’t do.

Feeling hostile emotions is a whole lot of work. Carrying such negative intentions weighs us down. We may have been wronged and believe someone should suffer, but who, in the end, really pays?

The following is a story of how a recent client of mine resolved her burning desire to punish her ex-husband for leaving her and planning to remarry. Her actions turned not just her life but other people’s lives upside down.

Ella is a 40-year-old socialite from London. Having just recently gone through a two-year divorce, Ella felt betrayed and abandoned. She loved her husband, Jack, as well as everything that their marriage gave her–a sense of being sheltered, cosseted and cared for. Now single after 15 years of marriage, she felt let down and left behind.

To top it off, Jack had announced that he was remarrying and wanted to lower her alimony.

Ella decided she had had enough and declared an all-out war.

“He’s taking me back to court to cut down my alimony,” she cried. “I’m going to make his life miserable! I’m going to make sure he doesn’t speak to the kids. That will show him.”

Ella was filled with angst and resented his cheapness. “Doesn’t he care about the children? Doesn’t he know he’s hurting them too?”

The first thing I asked Ella to do was to go back to the beginning of their marriage. “What was he like?” I asked.

“He was kind, gentle and loving.” She gleamed as she recalled their early days together.

    “Was he generous?”

    “OMG! So generous,” she exclaimed.

“Are you still expecting him to care about you and treat you the same way?”

It was plain from Ella’s silence and the expression on her face that her expectations hadn’t changed–even though their relationship had. She was playing a never-ending waiting game, chasing a snippet of something familiar from Jack, something she could cherish, something that would convince her he still had feelings for her. But that something would never come.

Jack had changed. And so had their relationship. By expecting the behavior of the former Jack, Ella was only hurting herself. She would never get what she wanted. That part of their relationship no longer existed. Meanwhile, instead of moving on like Jack was doing, she was making an incredible mess of her life.

Like Ella, how many of us have acted out negatively at one time or another in order to relive the past?

Revengeful emotions arise when two opposing ideas meld into one loose idea to create a contradiction. In Ella’s case, a yearning for an idealized memory of Jack, who had been generous and loving, versus the coarseness of Jack of today, created an irreconcilable contradiction. How do you live with that?

When, like dark versus light, we polarize our mind into two opposing forces, we’re right to go back to the beginning–if just ever so briefly. Stepping back into the past and asking “what was it like” brings the real issue–our outworn expectations– to the surface.

Ella was waiting for Jack to fulfill her expectations, which were now obsolete. By seeing the contradiction Ella knew that to escape her private hell, she needed to change her expectations. Not lower them, not cast them aside, but align her expectations with reality. In doing so, the contradiction no longer existed in her mind, and her need for revenge instantly lifted. Rather than force circumstances, Ella accepted her fate. In doing so, she freed herself from a bond she’d created: In her desire for revenge, she had become a victim, the one who “paid.”

Acceptance comes from the same place we get our “aha” moments from: that all-knowing place within. To ask anyone to go from revenge to acceptance is almost impossible. The first step has to come from a place of reflection and silence – this will give you a present state of mind. Being present is where we derive our strength from, and acceptance can only live in real-time. It cannot come from our past or our future. It is a gift that comes with the presence of mind.

Revenge is a bitter tonic and, although the thought of it may feel seductive, it serves no one in the end.

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

Grieving After Orlando: 5 Ways To Take Care Of Yourself

If you’re like most of us, you’re reeling from the aftermath of last weekend’s shooting in Orlando. Maybe you’re feeling low, or you’ve noticed yourself snapping at loved ones. Perhaps you can’t quite stay focused on your work.

All of this is normal in the face of loss. Even if you haven’t personally lost a friend or family member, chances are that the outpouring of grief from the Orlando massacre has rekindled your own. That’s one of the functions of public grief–it serves as a container for all of us to process our grief.

But what if you’re not grieving any recent losses? Maybe you’re still carrying around leftover fragments from a death long ago. Or perhaps you find yourself missing your ex-husband. Or a beloved friend or pet.

Maybe you can’t even pinpoint what you’re missing. You just feel it. The loss of innocence, the simple life you once enjoyed–something you’d once taken for granted.

Whatever the cause of your grief, please know that you’re not alone. Grief brings up old grief, and it’s one of the reasons we find ourselves struggling even when a significant event such as the Orlando massacre didn’t impact us personally.

Below are 5 tips to take care of yourself during this difficult time.

    1. Give yourself extra time and space. We all need time and space to process our emotions; otherwise, they’ll sideline us. Much like a beach ball held under water, our emotions always rise to the surface–often disastrously when we don’t acknowledge them.
    2. Give yourself permission. Permission to reschedule non-essential meetings and events, to turn off the news, to say NO to anything that doesn’t feed your soul.
    3. Reach out to loved ones. Squeeze in a walk with an old friend, invite your teen out for a movie, show up on your mother’s doorstep with an extra hug, set aside 15 minutes of uninterrupted time with your spouse.
    4. Give yourself extra TLC. Go for a walk. Prepare a nourishing meal. Turn off the news, get outside and breathe some fresh air. Practice compassion for yourself before attempting to bestow it onto others. (For more on this, read Kristin Neff’s groundbreaking work on self-compassion.)
    5. Recommit to your personal values. Consider the legacy you’d like to leave behind. Will it be love? Kindness? Recommit to the people and the values that bring joy and meaning to your life.

Inspired by the real-life challenges we all face but rarely discuss, Tanja Pajevic creates books, blogs and workshops to support life’s big transitions. The author of 9 Steps to Heal Your Resentment and Reboot Your Marriage, she is currently completing a grief memoir about the transformational aspect of loss. Connect with her here.

Filibustering Senator Tells Young Son: ‘I Hope You’ll Understand Someday Why We’re Doing This’

When his young son entered the gallery on Wednesday night, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), was waging a filibuster in an attempt to force a gun reform vote. From the Senate floor, he offered some poignant words to the boy.

“I’m sorry I missed pizza night,” Murphy said. “I hope that you’ll understand someday why we’re doing this.”

Led by senators who represent Newtown, Connecticut — where 26 people, including 20 children, were killed in a mass shooting in 2012 — Democrats took control of the Senate floor to call for change in gun laws.

Murphy, who launched the filibuster, vowed to keep talking “as long as I can” in order to spark action that would “stem this epidemic of gun violence and in particular this epidemic of mass shootings.”

The move came three days after the Orlando attack, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

“There is a fundamental disconnect with the American people when these tragedies continue to occur and we just move forward with business as usual,” Murphy said. “So I’m going to remain on this floor until we get some signal, some sign that we can come together on these two measures, that we can get a path forward on addressing this epidemic in a meaningful bipartisan way.”

As of midnight Thursday, the filibuster was ongoing.

Many on social media reacted to Murphy’s comments to his son, with some offering to get the senator “some pizza.”

The No. 1 Tool Busy Entrepreneurs Need (And No, It’s Not A New Tech Gadget)

It takes a certain type of character to be an entrepreneur. It’s a character that thrives in chaos, sees huge risk as huge reward, and is deeply excited by whatever endeavor they are launching. For many entrepreneurs the time period before their idea becomes a totally solid business is so thrilling that it is almost an addiction. As soon as the to-do list is clear, calm can feel eerily uncomfortable.

There are lists and lists of what helps an entrepreneur be successful. This software can help you organize your priorities, this book can help you lead your team, this motivational poster will help you beat your competition, etc. But all these tools will fall short for the entrepreneur who is at the mercy of their own mind. For the person who carries the “entrepreneur for life” card, there is only one real tool (and it requires no fancy technology) that you need and that is to learn to meditate.

People think meditation is about not having thoughts and relaxing. It is 100% the opposite. It brings a more awakened state to your consciousness and therefore all your actions. It allows the mind to use more of its ability, making the meditator more effective at everything that they do.

Here are some of the ways meditation actually translates into results:

OBJECTIVITY. Being an entrepreneur can often feel like if you add one more thing to what you are doing the entire tower you are balancing on your pinky finger might collapse. Meditation settles the mind so you can more objectively see if all the blocks stacked in the tower actually have to be there or not. After cultivating a meditation practice you might see some blocks might need to be removed or perhaps some blocks should be rearranged. Meditation helps you build a solid foundation and ensures there are no cracks as you build upwards.

REACTIVITY. It’s natural to think that if you react stronger or faster that an outcome will get done quicker or match more closely your intention. However for an entrepreneur being quick to react can sometimes lead to careless mistakes which can lead to loss of resources and time. Meditation helps you learn to create space between what you are observing and your reaction time. That space between action and reaction carries huge potential; being able to be in that space longer can literally change the outcome of a situation from a total triumph to a total disaster.

PRODUCTIVITY. There is never enough time. Ever. For an entrepreneur this is a fact. And one of the most sacrificed commodities for a busy entrepreneur is sleep. Unfortunately lack of sleep and over caffeinating doesn’t make for more getting accomplished. Meditation is a powerful way to deeply rest the body and mind. When you are meditating you are consciously resting which recuperates your being. If you feel you don’t have time for meditation, by meditating you become more effective so that you actually get time back.

There are a variety of techniques for meditating. Approach learning mediation like you would learning anything new. Take a course or a class-online or in person. Find a technique that will work for you and stick with it. Make the time to meditate and you will reap the benefits, guaranteed.

How To Get Over Rejection (And Your Ex) In 3 Minutes

When your partner leaves you, getting over the heartbreak can feel like an impossible task.

What you may need to process the pain is a change in perspective, philosopher Alain de Botton says in a new illustrated video from The School of Life.

“Don’t attempt to minimize what’s happened,” he says. “Being brave has no place here. Allow your sadness so much room, so much time, so many melancholic songs, hot baths and indulgent meals, you eventually bore yourself back into an appetite for life.”

Once you’ve acknowledged your sadness and had some good cries, try not to blame your ex too harshly for the breakup.

“It isn’t a question of them not trying hard enough,” de Botton says. “Remove morality from it. They were not being bad for not loving nor were you good for wanting them. You were both on a search for pleasure that took you on different and conflicting routes.”

Watch the video above for more tips for moving on once and for all.
